A weekend in Le Mans: what to see and do

Published on 21 April 2026 by admin

Le Mans is one of western France’s most underrated getaways: just 54 minutes from Paris by high-speed train, the city blends 2,000 years of history, a film-set old town and a rising food scene. Here’s our ideal 48-hour itinerary — tried and tested by the Fafa Conciergerie team.

Saturday morning: the Plantagenet Old Town

This is the beating heart of Le Mans: a maze of cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses among the best preserved in France. Wander down Rue de la Reine-Bérengère, admire the Maison du Pilier Rouge, and finish at Saint-Julien Cathedral, whose Gothic apse is one of the boldest in Europe. On Saturday mornings, the Jacobins market spreads out at the foot of the cathedral — perfect for a basket of local produce: rillettes (of course), farmhouse cheeses, local cider.

Saturday afternoon: the Roman wall

Few people know it: Le Mans has the best-preserved Roman wall in France, glowing red at sunset along the Sarthe river. The walk below offers the finest photos of the city. On the way back up, stop at the Reine-Bérengère museum or the Carré Plantagenêt to understand the Gallo-Roman city.

Saturday evening: dinner in the old town

The old town is full of small restaurants: reinvented local cuisine, wine bars, characterful crêperies. Book ahead — the good spots fill up fast at weekends. Ask us for our current favourites, the list changes with the seasons!

Sunday: museums, gardens… or engines

Depending on your mood: the 24 Hours Museum and its incredible collection of racing cars (allow 2 hours), the gardens of the former bishop’s palace, or the Royal Abbey of L’Épau just minutes from the centre.
