Nancy in 48 hours: from Place Stanislas to Art Nouveau
Nancy is a capital in pocket format: UNESCO-listed for its 18th-century ensemble, birthplace of the École de Nancy and French Art Nouveau, and delicious down to its bergamot sweets. Here’s our perfect weekend itinerary.
Day 1: the triumph of the 18th century
Start with THE masterpiece: Place Stanislas, its gilded Jean Lamour gates and Emmanuel Héré façades. Have a coffee on a terrace to take it in, then continue to Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance — the three squares form the UNESCO-listed ensemble. In the afternoon, the Fine Arts Museum (on the square) and the medieval old town around the Porte de la Craffe shift you into another era. In the evening, the square lights up — in summer, don’t miss the sound-and-light show.
Day 2: Art Nouveau and the École de Nancy
Nancy was, with Paris, the epicentre of French Art Nouveau. The École de Nancy Museum (a patron’s villa) brings together Gallé, Majorelle, Daum: furniture, glassware, stained glass — a delight. Continue with a tour of Art Nouveau façades (the Chamber of Commerce, the Weissenburger house, the recently restored and now visitable Villa Majorelle).
The foodie break
Impossible to leave without: the bergamotes de Nancy (amber sweets with a citrus aroma), the Sisters’ macarons, mirabelle plum in every form, and a real bakery quiche lorraine.
